If you follow Hashtags on Instagram, I’m sure you’ve come across the recent uproar for the “NoMakeUpSelfie”.
This began as an effort to raise money for breast cancer research in the UK. It was a very very successful attempt at the beginning where more than a whopping 800,000 donations were made, almost 2 million pounds have been donated thus far. Amazing! All someone has to do is text BEAT to 70099, and they will have donated in 3 pounds.
Girls take a picture (or 50) of themselves with no make up on, upload it with the hashtag #NoMakeUpSelfie, and tag their girlfriends to nominate them to do the same. Of course- this soon turned into girls ultimately looking for attention and fishing for compliments.
Don’t get me wrong-I think the initial idea behind this campaign is amazing. It’s a fun way to get people, mostly women, to donate to a great cause we can all be effected by (men too). But the whole point is lost when selfies are being posted and no money is being donated.
I’m all for natural beauty, but the entire point is being lost. No one is being helped other than the ego of the person posting the photograph. I say we go out and start out own campaign and raise money for important issues in Kuwait. Let’s all make a difference and help one another-in a way other than taking photos of yourself.
